Skirt 19 - The Spice

My homage to Judy Chicago... (close-up of the kick-pleat)

Today's skirt is a basic light weight khaki, cotton A-line skirt from Ann Taylor. It has kick-pleats in the front and the back, hits at the knee, but has no pockets. I really like pockets. I like the texture of the fabric: it's quite linear.

S P I C E
Someone said I should "spice things up a bit." I'm open to suggestions BUT it is a khaki skirt. I've accessorized with peacock earrings, I'm wearing a tube top, but I usually don't write about these things in Skirt Project.

So, how can I spice up Skirt Project? I'm thinking...
But how? when I have a life to live, and work to do...
Should I include: more exotic locations?
interesting props?
popular people?
risque photos?
It's just not my style. It could just be that most of my skirts are conservative. OR it could just be that I am in a rut this week. who knows... everyone is allowed to have an off week, even if they are wearing skirts.

Here is a poem I wrote for today's skirt

Simple
Khaki
Intelligent
(w)Rinkly
Textured

BAM! there's your spice.

My co-worker Em and I worked hard last night.
We had to put our working shoes on! We were moving art, putting vinyl up on the walls, and getting ready for the big event!

We stayed late, but I left at 7 to go check out my big screen debut at the Angelica. Em left around 10:30 and got into a car accident later that night. She is in the hospital, getting surgery on her wrist. "It's bojangled."

Poor thing, she's missing her first event that she's ever planned. It's gonna be great, but it won't be the same without her.

Get well soon Em! I miss you!

Skirt 18

Can you tell which is me?

Skirt 18 is a pink cotton pleated skirt from the Gap. It was on sale, another purchase from living in the "bubble." It was on sale for $16.99 or something. I bought this skirt and many others when I finished my graduate coursework and started an internship at a museum. Over the course of two semesters, I had managed to lose 15 lbs and switch careers... sort of. I still teach, just in a different entity. I enjoy what I do and I am doing so much more in the community, but... we'll see.

Today's skirt is for Kate, who I will see later today at Happy Hour. I can't wait! I like today's skirt because it reminds me of Kate and this photo. We used to work together and this is from my last week at the office. All year, people kept confusing us. We couldn't figure it out and thought it was hilarious. We have similar features and the same impeccable taste in clothing, but we are discernable for sure. Might I add that she is a beautiful person, inside and out. But we had a lot of the same clothes and shoes, so that day we decided to dress the same. Same skirt, same shoes, same shirt. It was pretty funny. Actually, it was really funny and it still makes me laugh.
8 more hours!

So glad I had happy hour to look forward to tonight. After the day I had, I needed it. KT got some good skirt shots this evening. Unfortunately they are all on his camera.

Skirt 17

Skirt 17 has to be the OLDEST skirt in my closet. I bought it in the 1990's at the Dillard’s outlet, must have been '96 or '97. It's one of my longer skirts, A-line, and hits right at my ankles. It's made of a silk and linen blend, which gives it a nice sheen, but wrinkles easily.

As I go through my skirts, it's funny what I remember. I remember the prices of the skirts. I paid $6.00 for this skirt, and I actually bought two, the other is sitting in my sewing basket (I think). It's a darker gray, reminds me of wet clay. By the way, is it gray or grey? I chopped off the bottom so that I could have a mini skirt, never got around to hemming it up... like so many of my projects... started but never finished... hope I finish Skirt Project.

Skirt 17 and I went to the high school in Pleasant Grove that I speak so fondly of... We're writing a grant for this crazy idea I had. I want to build a large scale chess set in their courtyard. The pieces would be about three feet tall or so... Why? Because these kids play chess, they know chess. It's part of their school's culture, but you wouldn't think it to walk these halls. Just today, one kid said, "F*@k you!" when I wouldn't give him a dollar. He didn't even say please!
Anyway, I'm putting this photo out there, not because I think it's a good photo, but because I want to offer this idea to the universe. The proposal is due tomorrow and it's all I've been able to think about for the past two weeks. This is the courtyard. I want this to happen so badly...

This photo is from my lunch break that I finally took at 4 o'clock this afternoon. I mean how long does a girl have to wait to eat a sandwich?

Thanks for taking this photo Jake & thanks for making my yummy sandwich.

I like this photo because it looks like I'm floating.

Skirt 16 Monday Monday Monday

I didn't want to get out of bed this morning. I didn't want to wear a skirt. It was raining and I thought about taking the day off, but I put my big girl panties on and selected a skirt. (Thanks Em) I have two stains on my skirt from this morning: Face powder and toothpaste.

Skirt 16 is a simple black pencil skirt from The Limited. This skirt cost $19.99. I bought it last December on a bargain shopping spree with my bff. We each blew $300 in two hours at the Galleria, I think I bought 6 items for my wardrobe. Not bad.
Good times!

However, it's a little bit big: a little loose in the waist and hips area AND I am NOT fond of the belt loops. There are six and they are each three inches long! I think it looks stupid with my skinny belts, plus I usually don't wear belts with my skirts.
Last season, big cinch belts were in style. They just weren't my style. That explains the three inch belt loops, but they still really bother me. I just needed a simple black skirt, and this isn't exactly what I wanted. Maybe that's why I hardly wear it.

It suits the way I feel today. Hum-drum.

Ate at Taco Loco on Main Street today. The burritos are pretty good, and they're cheap too. I wasn't really into today's skirt... I wasn't really into today. I think I'm still tired from the 24 hour video race. I didn't like what I was wearing, but I got a couple of compliments. I just felt frumpy. (Man, I'm complain-y!)

I went home, checked the mail, and got stung by a bee! This was my third bee sting in my life. The first time I was 13 in Yosemite National Park with my family, got me on my arm. The second time it was picture day my first year of teaching, got me on my forehead and the back of my neck. Today, I was just reaching for my InStyle magazine and DANG, got me on my index finger! Not a very exciting story, but it was a pretty poopie day UNTIL I checked my e-mail AND...

I got two FREE tickets to see SPOON tomorrow night!

The End.

Zomburbia

The Chili Dogs are getting ready to turn in our film for the 24 Hour Video Race. It's called Zomburbia.

It started last night at midnight. Red Bull came out to the house while we brainstormed. I have one scene in our film, I'm wearing Skirt 4. What was my role? I died after I went shopping. Then I got eaten.

It was lots of fun. So tired now, must get some sleep.
Chili Dogs rule.

Skirt 15

Skirt 15.
End of week 3.
1/4 of the way there.

Today's skirt is a light cotton calico print. Another deviation from my usual basic black wardrobe. I bought this at Loehmann's here in Dallas about five years ago. Oh, how I miss that store... It was on sale, I think for $19.99. It's some brand I have never heard of - Vince.

I like the way today's skirt fits. It's cut like a fitted, tailored mini, with another panel sewn on the bottom. On the panel, there are a series of a set of three tucks that go all the way around the skirt. It's delicate and feminine.

I've noticed I'm drawn to the same elements in a skirt. Tucks and ruffles seem to be a repeating detail in the craftsmanship.

Another day with my skirt. Ate at a new place today: La Popular Tamale House. They were REAL good! On my coffee break, I ran into my friend, porn-star Lance Landers!

Just kidding Lance. Hearts to you! (giggles)

Skirt 14 ~ Mariposas

Mi falda tiene muchas mariposas. I like today's skirt. It's so pretty.

I'll write more later.

More later.

ha.

I'm so tired. Today has been a long day. This photo is from another field trip; hit the Crow Collection of Asian Art. There is a great exhibition Changing Identity featuring contemporary women artists from Vietnam. It's up until May 27th, so go check it out. It's FREE.

leaving Artvocacy. My feet hurt, good thing I had my sandals in my bag. Glad it's over. Back to the office. Lot's of work to do... bummer. Does it ever end?

Today's skirt is from Target. It's Isaac Mizrahi. It's so girlie and light. Very summer-y. I bought it last year. It was on the rack for a second, they were gone pretty quick. It was too cute, so it was an impulse buy. At the time I didn't own anything like it, but I knew I would regret it if I didn't buy it that moment... That's a pretty crazy way of thinking... I HAD to have it.

So, mariposas means butterflies in Spanish. I was going to write something inspiring about how butterflies symbolize transformation, rebirth, or blah, blah, blah. I don't feel like doing that anymore. Everything is still pretty much the same, but it's a nice thought. I invite you to think about it... feel free to comment.

I like this skirt, that's all that matters. This one is a keeper.

Artvocacy

Just a note about what my skirt and I were up to today... I volunteer with the Dallas branch of the International Rescue Committee, a leading nonsectarian organization dedicated to refugee relief, protection and resettlement (That was taken from their website...) Anyway, it's an amazing organization. Working with the kids from the IRC, has been so rewarding. I feel so selfish, it has made such a positive impact in my life. That may sound cliché, but seriously - it's not... its da truf.

Anyway, tomorrow night, Thursday, May 17th, the 3rd annual fundraiser, “Artvocacy: Advocacy through Art,” takes place at Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas, from 6 - 9 PM. Admission is $40 for the general public and $25 for students and refugees. Admission includes refreshments and live entertainment. All proceeds from the event will go to support local refugees and IRC programs in Dallas.

If you would like to attend or volunteer for IRC, click here.

the thirteenth skirt

Photo 1: I was running a teeny bit late this morning. Right after I snapped this skirt shot, I got a speeding ticket.

Photo 2: Posted 12:33 pm.
Check out the effects on the iMac Book Pro. This one is called COMIC. Looks like Roy Lichtenstein to me. "A Fine," our fabulous intern, just got her computer for graduation. She wanted to take a pic for Skirt Project. Thanks A. Fine!
I'm jealous.

Today's skirt is pin-striped, A-line, and cut on the bias. The hem hits at the knee and is flow-y. Conservative? Perhaps. It's a very business-y Wall Street type, and always makes me think of American Psycho. This skirt means business. I feel confident in it. I had an early meeting this morning, I'm writing a grant for an underserved high school. I pitched my proposal to the principal and a few key teachers and they're on-board! This would be a great opportunity for this school and community – some positive attention instead of the negative they usually get.

Another find from Ross, I bought today’s skirt for $6.99. I think that's the perfect price for a skirt. Why do things have to be so dang expensive?

An interesting note about skirt project. I mentioned last week that I had gone shopping, but did not buy anything. Skirt Project has made me really conscious of all that I have and need to get rid of. Yesterday was payday, and I realized I went an entire pay period with out buying one piece of clothing. For me, this is H U G E!

Scroll down yesterday's skirt for yesterday's story.

Hot dog... good-bye Tay Tay

"Tay in the wind!"

Today was Tay Tay's last day at the office, and I am so sad. We went out for lunch, just the two of us to Wild About Harry's. I love hot dogs! It was so tasty, tasty! We had a picnic by the brown-eyed Susan's (I think that's what they're called). I'm going to miss my office mate.

Later that night, I waited for my car to start. It got messed up at the carwash... Another story for another blog. Five hours later, it eventually started... Something about the programming and the key. I didn't realize I owned such a smart car. How stupid of me! My car is clean now, and greasy in the inside. What is that stuff they rub on the interior? Vaseline?

After wearing the skirt all day, I have decided not to keep it. It doesn't hang right and it keeps falling down. Must be the drawstring. Some skirts make you feel really great, but this skirt just made me self-conscious... "Is my slip showing? Do I need to pull it up?" etc.

Good-bye Tay Tay. Good-bye skirt.
